Overview

The TB31PCIEX16 is an external Thunderbolt 3 to PCIe expansion chassis that enables a Thunderbolt‑equipped laptop or desktop to host a full‑length, standard PCIe x16 card outside the host system. It is deployed where systems lack internal PCIe expansion slots yet require connectivity to cards such as NICs, high‑speed I/O, storage controllers, capture cards, or other PCIe devices via an external interface.

This expansion box uses a Thunderbolt 3 host interface delivering up to 40 Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth and exposes an internal PCIe 3.0 x16 female slot for standard cards. It also includes a DisplayPort output, enabling direct attachment of monitors without consuming host GPU ports. The enclosure supports Thunderbolt daisy‑chaining so additional Thunderbolt devices can be connected through the same host port.

The chassis is built in a desktop enclosure with aluminum/steel construction, internal cooling fan, and comes with a Thunderbolt 3 cable and external power adapter. Installation requires a Thunderbolt 3 port on the host system and is compatible with Windows and macOS drivers that support PCIe expansion chassis.

This product is suitable for extending workstation or laptop capability where internal PCIe slots are absent or inaccessible, such as mobile workstations, compact desktops, or edge compute nodes. It is not a standalone compute system and cannot be used without a Thunderbolt‑capable host. The chassis is not designed as an enclosure for GPU e‑GPUs in high‑performance gaming without verifying host support and PCIe lane allocation.
